16 Huw Bennett

17 Cai Griffiths

18 Ian Evans

19 Filo Tiatia

20 Jamie Nutbrown

21 Jonathan Spratt

22 Gareth Owen
Ospreys Director of Coaching, Scott Johnson, commented:
"With another massive derby match coming up straight away, it's the perfect chance for us to work on the areas of concern that we have after the Scarlets game, and to focus on taking us up to the next level. We realise the size of the challenge on Friday if we are going to make it two wins from two in the derbies. Make no mistake about it, we are going up against a very good side. The Blues are a team packed with quality and experience, and with 10 to call upon in their squad they probably have more Lions available than any other side in the Magners League with is an indication of the strength in depth they have. They took a real stride forward in terms of results and achievements last season, and with a fantastic new stadium and facilities at the Vale that really are out of this world, understandably, expectations have risen accordingly.
"They may not have got the results that they would have hoped for this season so far, but the quality in the squad speaks for itself, and after a good win on Sunday night, they will approach Friday's game with confidence. It's going to be another great occasion, just like Boxing Day was, with a big crowd and a great atmosphere. It kicks off an important month for the Ospreys, and we are all excited about what lies in store. We know that we have to get the performance right, starting with Friday.
"We're in an interesting place at the moment, we've put ourselves in a decent position in both the Magners League and the Heineken Cup without really playing as well as want to, or as we are capable of. We've shown flashes of our ability over the last few weeks, and put together a decent run of results, but we still have some way to go yet. It was a good win against the Scarlets last weekend, an excellent result against local rivals, which made the supporters happy, and we showed real grit and character to dig in when they were pressing, but overall, we were disappointed with aspects of our performance and have worked hard on putting these things right for this week."
The following players were not considered because of injury:
Craig Mitchell - fractured rib

Alun-Wyn Jones - shoulder

James Hook - shoulder

Duncan Jones - broken bone in foot

Barry Davies - groin

Shane Williams - torn hamstring

Mike Phillips - ankle ligament

Tom Isaacs - shoulder reconstruction

Conor McInerney - knee

Lyndon Bateman - knee

30.12.09. Charvis takes over as Dragons Forwards Coach

Newport Gwent Dragons can announce that Welsh back row Colin Charvis will take over from Leigh Jones as Forwards Coach until the end of the season.

This news follows the announcement last week that Paul Turner has agreed a two-year contract extension to see him remain at Rodney Parade until May 2012.
"I think that we have achieved above expectation this season and I’m keen to continue that as part of the coaching team," said Charvis.
"Leigh has achieved a lot over the last few years and having shadowed him closely, this is a great opportunity for me to take on the role as forwards coach and continue what the coaching team has implemented so far.
"We are very lucky to have a couple of forwards with international experience, so hopefully things should carry on running pretty smoothly."
Wales’ most capped forward Charvis, has been with the region since 2006 when he joined as a player and has made the successful transition into coaching the region.
"Colin has done an excellent job as Defence Coach this season," said Dragons Rugby Manager Robert Beale. "This role is a very important part of Colin’s development and fits in with this organisation’s aim to develop and promote from within.
"Taking over the Forwards Coach role until the end of the season will give Colin a great opportunity to establish himself as a coach of the future. I am sure that the respect he has earned in the game will serve him well in embarking on his coaching career.
"This appointment will see Colin enlarge on his current role as Defence Coach. We have decided not to add to the coaching team at this time, pending a review at the end of the season."

30.12.09. Gogs -Fenby, McCusker and Higgitt- in Scarlets line up v Dragons

Scarlets name team to face Dragons on New Years Eve

Date: Wednesday 30th December 2009
Issued on behalf of Scarlets
The Scarlets have named their 22-man squad to face the Dragons on New Years Eve (2.05pm, Rodney Parade) in the Magners League.
Exciting up-and-coming scrum half talent, Gareth Davies (19), recently named in Wales' U20 squad for the 2010 Six Nations, starts for the Scarlets, replacing Martin Roberts with Tavis Knoyle still on the sidelines with an ankle strain.
Davies has been impressive at scrum half with Premiership club Llanelli RFC this season and was part of the Scarlets squad that drew against Harlequins at the Stoop in November.
North Walian back row Rob McCusker (24) starts at flanker for the Dragons game, having put in a strong and physical performance in the second half against the Ospreys on Boxing Day.
McCusker replaces Simon Easterby who sustained a hand injury during the sell-out Boxing Day derby at Parc y Scarlets. Easterby has fractured a finger and will be out for around five weeks.
Centre Rob Higgitt and flanker Richie Pugh return to the Scarlets 22, Pugh now fit following a shoulder injury picked up against Leinster in the Heineken Cup.
Lee Williams comes in on the wing to replace Morgan Stoddart who picked up a minor groin injury against the Ospreys last weekend.
The Scarlets go into Welsh derby having won their three last games against the Dragons, and have been victorious on four of their last five visits to Rodney Parade.
However, Scarlets Head Coach Nigel Davies knows that based on the Dragons' 100% home record in the Magners League this season, his young Scarlets team will be facing a tough encounter.
He said: "It's another big game for us, the Dragons are playing a very expansive brand of rugby and getting on the right side of results.
"They have had an excellent home record in the Magners this season, it will be tough to go there - particularly as we're carrying a small squad at the moment with eight of our front-liners now out through injury."
Scarlets Captain David Lyons said there was plenty of spirit shown by his team against the Ospreys on Boxing Day and that the Dragons game would have the same level of intensity.
"It will be a similar sort of game to the Ospreys, a good atmosphere at Rodney Parade and probably a big crowd - we'll have to work hard but we also know we have enough skill and talent to get the result, we just need to keep our focus and play for the full 80 minutes."
Scarlets selection v Newport Gwent Dragons Thursday 31st December 2009 at Rodney Parade.
15 Rhys Priestland, 14 Lee Williams, 13 Sean Lamont, 12 Jonathan Davies, 11 Andy Fenby, 10 Stephen Jones, 9 Gareth Davies, 1 Phil John, 2 Ken Owens, 3 Deacon Manu, 4 Lou Reed, 5 Dominic Day, 6 Rob McCusker, 7 Johnathan Edwards, 8 David Lyons (captain).
Replacements: 16 Jamie Corsi, 17 Emyr Phillips, 18 Damian Welch, 19 Richie Pugh, 20 Daniel Evans, 21 Gareth Maule, 22 Rob Higgitt.

29.12.09.Wales u18 Coach to select squad

WRU PRESS RELEASE

Issued: 29 December 2009
WRU U18 COACH TO SELECT SQUAD
Wales Under 18 head coach Simon King will select his 26 man squad for the international season after today (Wednesday)'s WRU Under 18 Regional Championship final between the Blues and the Scarlets (Aberavon, 2pm).
King said, "A number of places in the national squad are still up for grabs so today's game is a trial in many ways. The Scarlets and Blues have performed consistently well in this season's excellent WRU Under 18 Regional Championship so I'm looking forward to a competitive and entertaining game.
"Nine of the squad that played against Australian Schools earlier this month are still available to us but we also have a number of young players who have cut their teeth in this Championship and are pushing for places. The game against Australia was a good exercise for us, the players gave a good account of themselves and fell short of a victory due to an element of naivety but the players would have got a lot out of the game.
"There was an excellent crowd at the game - over 2500 - and I hope the games against France at Cross Keys and England at Aberavon will also be well supported.
"We have a good record against France in recent years, and it would be great to build on last year's win on French soil with a home victory.
"England are always tough but it is important we build towards our home Six Nations festival in April.
Once we have selected our squad, we will play Leicester Tigers academy home and away in training exercises in preparation for the French Test in February.
"Wales Under 18 is very much the first rung on the international ladder but it is an important one if these players are to take the next step towards professional rugby."

28.12.09 Bowe signs for 3 years

Bowe signs for three more years

Date: Monday 28th December 2009
Issued on behalf of Ospreys
The Ospreys are delighted to confirm that Tommy Bowe has signed a new contract that keeps him at the region until the end of the 2012-13 season.
25-year old Bowe, who can play anywhere in the back three or at centre, has made a huge impact in an Ospreys shirt since arriving in the region in the summer of 2008. Fans favourite Bowe has already made 34 appearances for the Ospreys, scoring 18 tries, including an impressive nine in his last ten outings.
His form in an Ospreys shirt has been replicated on the international scene, where he has established himself as a regular in the green of Ireland, scoring 11 tries in 25 appearances. He enjoyed a hugely successful summer tour with the British & Irish Lions to South Africa, starting all three tests and scoring four tries during the tour.
Bowe, who is also the all-time leading Magners League try scorer, originally signed a two year deal with an option to extend for an extra year, but he has now agreed to commit to a further three years at the Liberty Stadium. Speaking after putting pen to paper on the new contract, Bowe said:
"The Ospreys coaching staff, combined with the rugby programme in place here at the Ospreys, is helping me to fulfill my potential. In addition, as a team I feel we are on the cusp of something special and I want to be part of it. From an international perspective, the Ospreys have been the platform for much of the rugby success I have enjoyed, along with the memories I have banked over an unbelievable last 18 months, and as a result I feel a strong sense of loyalty to them.
I was flattered by the interest from other European clubs, but after taking advice from my agent, family and friends, it all came back to the fact that I am enjoying my rugby and life in general at the Ospreys.
"Obviously, a return to Ireland had a strong emotional pull and I take enormous pride in the privilege of wearing the Irish jersey. With a father from Munster and a mother from Leinster, who are season ticket holders at Ulster, and having played for Ulster with great friends there, you can imagine the thorough family discussions about the merits of returning to play in Ireland.
"I just feel all the ingredients are here for long-term success and I wanted to give Mike Cuddy, Roger Blyth, the coaches, my team-mates and the Ospreys supporters my commitment for three years. I'm very excited about what we can achieve in that space of time. I love the way we play rugby here at the Ospreys and I'm excited about being involved in the Christmas derby games and upcoming crucial European fixtures."
Ospreys Head Coach, Sean Holley, said:
"This is clearly excellent news for all concerned at the Ospreys, and is the perfect Christmas present. Tommy is a vital part of what we are trying to create here from a playing and a cultural point of view, and the fact that he has opted to extend his stay with us is a clear indication that he believes in what we are trying to do.
"When we originally targeted Tommy as a potential signing, we felt that as well as him bringing his obvious strengths to the team, that we could also offer him the opportunity to develop his own game and his career. This has certainly rung true, Tommy and the Ospreys have complimented each other fantastically over the last year and a half, and we are very proud of his achievements on the international stage. The fact that he is a proven try scorer, can play in a number of positions and exhibits good leadership qualities are an obvious bonus to the team.
"His performances so far this season have shown that there is even more to come from him and we are delighted that we are now able to call on his services for an additional three years. He is a genuine world-class talent, who is much sought after and still very young. The fact that he has opted to stay in our environment for as long as he has committed to as he feels that it is the best place for him at this moment in time, is a great boost for the players, coaches, administrators and supporters alike."
Ospreys Elite Performance Director, Andrew Hore, added:
"Once again the Ospreys board have clearly shown their support for the ambitions we have here as a coaching team and playing squad, and we are grateful as always for that backing. They share our long-term vision for the future of the region, and continue to back that up with their commitment and investment, on and off the field. The Directors have worked hard to secure Tommy's future with the Ospreys in the face of some intense competition, and for that they should be congratulated. His re-signing is a tremendous coup for the region and we look forward to seeing him in an Ospreys shirt over the coming seasons, as well as continuing his excellent work off the field to assist with the ongoing development of his fellow Ospreys.
"While we are committed to the development of local, young talent, and are proud of our enviable record of doing so, we have always maintained that we need to supplement this with a handful of top quality non-Welsh players who will add to what we are trying to create, on and off the pitch, and there is no doubt that Tommy certainly fit's the bill in that respect."

24.12.09 Scarlets Team v Ospreys

STODDART BACK AS SCARLETS NAME TEAM TO FACE OSPREYS ON BOXING DAY

Dyddiad/Date: Thursday 24th December 2009
Cyhoeddwyd ar ran y Scarlets/Issued on behalf of Scarlets
The Scarlets have named their 22-man squad to face the Ospreys on Boxing Day at Parc y Scarlets in front of a sell-out crowd.
The region is expecting its biggest ever Parc y Scarlets crowd for the highly charged local derby. The largest crowd recorded to date was 14,400 when the Scarlets played the Barbarians at the official opening of Parc y Scarlets in January this year.
With a record attendance of around 14,800 expected, the Scarlets off-field team are busy preparing Parc y Scarlets for the biggest and busiest game of the season so far.
This week the region announced four new contracts had been signed by top-ranking Scarlets players - Matthew Rees, Ken Owens, Daniel Evans and Iestyn Thomas - the Scarlets have had plenty to get excited about in the build-up to this game.
Scarlets supporters have been given an added Christmas boost with news that international winger Morgan Stoddart is back to fitness after his hamstring injury picked up with Wales, and will start for the team on Boxing Day.
Head Coach Nigel Davies said the squad were really looking forward to the derby: "We are really excited about this fixture as I am sure the Ospreys are. It will be great to perform in front of a full house and we're looking forward to a noisy atmosphere.
"With the disappointment of our last two games, its great to see we have such a big support behind us on Saturday and now we've got to give our supporters something to cheer about. "If there ever needed to be any added significance for this game - there certainly is for this one on Boxing Day. This fixture is about more than individuals, it is a massive game in its own right and is all about passion and pride and the team that wants it most will win it."
Davies conceded that the Ospreys would start as favourites with three wins out of three, but added that form tends to go out of the window at local derby games.
"They have what is essentially an international team - they are very good without the ball, they defend exceptionally well, they have a good kicking game and get a lot of their points from the pressure that they put on teams. And if you fall into the trap that they set, then it can be a difficult afternoon's work.
"We know it will be a tough one for us against pretty much a complete team and they come into it on the back of a series of wins.
"Saying that, in my experience, the form book doesn't always count for much on these types of occasions."
And the Head Coach added that the Scarlets were focusing on each individual game going forward.
"We are not dead in Europe by any means, we have vital games with London Irish here on the 17th of January and Brive away and there is still a lot to play for in the group. We have to win games in the Magners League to improve our position in the table, and we are in a strong position in the LV Cup.
"What we're doing at the moment is not looking too far ahead. We are taking every game as it comes - otherwise if you just look at the big picture you can lose your focus for individual games. There is still a lot of rugby ahead of us and most notably the two massive games for us now on Boxing Day and New Year's Eve against the Dragons. We need to win both."
And Lou Reed, who achieved his landmark 50th appearance for the region last weekend at Leinster said the players had put their last performance to bed and were hungry for a victory this weekend.
"This game will have more intensity because it's a local derby and will have more of an edge to it. We need to put right what happened last week with a statement and that will be to beat the Ospreys at our home ground.
"They are a great side but from my point of view it's exciting to be in these games and match yourself against the big players. We will go out guns blazing on Saturday and hopefully give our supporters something to shout about early on. We need to show people what we can do - we've everything to play for."
Reed who played in the official opening Barbarians game when the stadium was close to sell out said: "It makes such a big difference and will be a real boost to the players. It does give us an edge when our supporters are behind us."

Ian Gough makes his 50th appearance for the Ospreys
Ospreys Head Coach, Sean Holley, commented:
"It's a match that everybody at the Ospreys are all looking forward to, supporters, players, coaches alike. It's always a busy time of year for us, with the Magners League throwing up big local derbies, sandwiched in between important Heineken Cup games, and you can't fail to be excited by the prospect.
"There's going to be a big crowd at Parc Y Scarlets on Saturday, just as there will be at the Liberty Stadium the following weekend, and players love to be involved in these events. There's local bragging rights at stake, one upmanship between the players, but we mustn't lose sight of the biggest reward, which is a place in the play-offs at the end of the season.
"We've shown signs in the last few weeks that we are heading in the right direction, and we've posted some decent results, particularly in our last Magners League match against Munster. But, we are realistic about where we are at the moment, we know that we aren't performing as well as we would want to be in certain areas, and that has been the focus in training this week. We'll face a Scarlets team on Saturday who have shown several times already this season what they are capable of, so we know that we are going to have to raise our game another level again if we are going to get anything from the match."

23.12.09.Blues v Scarlets in U18 Age Grade Final

The Blues and Scarlets under 18s will meet in the final of the WRU Age Grade Championship at Aberavon's Talbot Athletic Ground next Wednesday (December 30, kick off 2pm).

Although the recent inclement weather has forced the postponement of half a dozen games in recent weeks, the two regions had already booked their respective places in the final - losing only one game between them in 12 matches.
The Scarlets, who went down 18-6 to the Blues back in September went on to win six successive games in the pool whilst the Blues remained as the only unbeaten side in the competition with six wins on the bounce.
On top of notable friendly wins in Ireland and England, the capital region might fancy their chances of making it a magnificent seven competitive wins in what has been another outstanding season of age grade rugby in Wales.
However, the Scarlets, who have won the toss for the home dressing room, will be keen to follow on from their recent wins against the Dragons and Ospreys.
"We have been delighted with the progress, both individually and collectively," said Blues team manager Sophie Bennett.
"Whilst we would love to finish the season with a victory, we are just happy with the development of the players in the squad."
Scarlets team manager Rob Evans said; "I think we saw by the competitive nature of the game between the sides earlier in the season that we are in for a decent final.
"Obviously the recent poor weather has meant the postponement of one or two games, but I am sure that both sides will be ready for what promises to be another great day for the competition."
Admission is £3 for adults and free for under 16s.

23.12.09. Dragons Turner extends contract

Dragons Head Coach Paul Turner has signed a new two-year contract extension which will see him remain at the helm of the Dragons until May 2012.

The former Welsh international has been coaching the Dragons since his return to Wales from the English Premiership in 2005, and during his time at the region his commitment to developing local talent has seen the emergence of young Welsh stars at both senior and age-grade level such as Danny Lydiate, Ashley Smith and Jason Tovey.
"I am Delighted the board have shown every confidence in my ability to continue to move the Region forward," said Turner. "This is an important time of year for us and me as head coach in regards to retention and recruitment of players for the forthcoming seasons. I enjoy working for the Dragons as this is my region and one where I was born and brought up in.
"My aim with the coaches and staff here at Rodney Parade is to continue to drive and push the Dragons forward so that we continue to develop and become a major player in the Magners league and in Europe. We have a young developing coaching staff under me and I look forward to working with them to develop this exciting bunch of players we have here."
"Paul’s commitment, pride and passion about the Dragons and Gwent Rugby is without question and we are delighted to retain his services until at least 2012," said Dragons Chief Executive Gethin Jenkins.
"Over the past 5 seasons we have seen the Dragons grow as an organisation, team and as individuals and Paul has played a key role in this regard. We are pleased that he will continue to help us with our aims of continued growth and development and the emergence of local talent."
Dragons Rugby Manager Robert Beale said "Extending Head Coach Paul Turners contract for the next two years gives the Dragons stability going forward and I look forward to working closely with Paul and his Coaching Team in implementing the many changes required to secure our business forward."

QUADRUPLE SIGNING AT SCARLETS BRINGS EARLY FESTIVE CHEER

Dyddiad/Date: Tuesday 22nd December 2009
Cyhoeddwyd ar ran y Scarlets/Issued on behalf of Scarlets
The Scarlets have given their supporters an early Christmas present with news that four of the region's top-ranking players have signed new contracts that will see them stay at Parc y Scarlets into 2013.
• British Lions and Wales hooker Matthew Rees, 29 has signed a new three-year contract, which will see him play with the Scarlets until 2013.
• Ken Owens, 22, the rising front-row star and in-form Scarlets player this season has signed a new three-year contract.
• Daniel Evans, 21, the talented, fast and athletic Scarlets fullback (former U15 British and Wales 80m hurdles champion) who earnt his first two senior Wales caps this summer in North America, signs on a new two-year deal with the region.
• Iestyn Thomas, 33, the experienced prop with 33 Wales caps to his name and 158 Scarlets appearances since his debut in 2002 signs a new two-year contract with his region.
The quadruple signing sees the Scarlets secure some key experience and emerging international talent in the front and back lines of the squad as the region seeks to build and develop its team over the next two to three years.
The announcement will give Scarlets supporters an additional boost this week ahead of the region's big showdown against neighbouring rivals, The Ospreys, for the sell-out Magners League fixture at Parc y Scarlets on Boxing Day.
Announcing the new signings today at Parc y Scarlets, Chief Executive Paul Sergeant who was part of the team that secured the quartet of Scarlets players said:
"This is great news for our region as we secure four top players for the next two to three years. This group of signings exemplifies what the Scarlets are all about this season and going forward - a strong mix of emerging talent and experience.
"To retain the services, experience and strength of key senior players such as our British Lions hooker Matthew Rees and prop Iestyn Thomas is crucial in our bid to strengthen and develop our Scarlets squad going forward. With a big emphasis on bringing through talented Scarlets youth, it is important that our younger players have experienced senior players to learn from at crucial times."
Scarlets Head Coach Nigel Davies said: "I am delighted to see these four important players continue their great service of this region as part of the squad that we are building up here over the next three years.
"All four of these players are true Scarlets in terms of their passion for the region and commitment to the shirt - and I am particularly pleased that we have young guys like Ken and Dan continuing their commitment to us as we bring through and support emerging talent from within our region to play at the top levels of Welsh rugby.
"Ken and Dan are shining examples of the success of our region's academy and development system in identifying and bringing through talented young players onto the regional and international stage and we look forward to seeing their future careers with the Scarlets and we'd expect - the national squad, to continue pushing forward at a pace."
Matthew Rees joined the Scarlets in 2004 having played for the Celtic Warriors and Pontypridd. Wales' first choice hooker, with 34 caps for this country, Rees played a major role in the recent autumn internationals. He saw his profile on the world stage grow after three impressive performances with the British Lions over the summer as part of and all Welsh front row alongside Gethin Jenkins and Adam Jones. Rees has appeared 121 times for his region and enjoyed a successful 2006-2007 season with the Scarlets in which he made an impressive 25 appearances notching three tries; one of which came in the Heineken Cup semi-final against the Leicester Tigers.
Ken Owens joined the region in 2004 as part of the Scarlets Academy. He has since burst on to the scene in the 2009-10 season and has put in some notable performances within the Magners League and Heineken Cup that now put him in likely contention for a Wales jersey in the Six Nations next year. Owens started his rugby career at a young age with Carmarthen Athletic Under 8's and has been a shining example of the strength of the Scarlets development system.
Daniel Evans is one of Scarlets' emerging home-grown young talents who has quickly moved up the region's and Wales' age grade ranks to become a mainstay of the Scarlets regional squad. He is another product of the Scarlets academy system, starting out with Ammanford RFC, and later Llandybie and Tumble. Evans showed his speed and agility to be crowned Welsh & British 80m hurdles champion under 15. In May 2009, Evans was called up to the senior Wales squad for the summer tour of North America. Evans appeared in both tour matches and made his Wales debut in the 32-23 win over Canada (30 May 2009).
Iestyn Thomas, the experienced Wales prop, and one of the strongest scrummaging looseheads in Welsh game has been the cornerstone of the Scarlets pack for the past seven years. He joined from hometown club Pontypool and has an impressive line of rugby honours to his name which includes 33 caps for Wales after making his debut in this country's victory against Samoa in the Autumn of 2000. He also played in Wales' 2003 Rugby World Cup squad.

Jones and Williams sign new contracts with the Blues

For Immediate release: Monday 21st December 2009
Issued on behalf of Cardiff Blues
Cardiff Blues have received a boost ahead of their Welsh derby match against the Dragons on Sunday with the confirmation that they have signed second row forward Deiniol Jones and hooker Gareth Williams on new contracts.
Gareth Williams has signed a new three year contract with the region that will keep him at the Blues until 2013.
A former pupil of Brynteg School in Bridgend, Gareth captained the Wales under-18 team that included Blues team mates Rhys Williams and Gary Powell. He made his international debut in the 2003 Six Nations' fixture in Italy and signed for the Blues that summer.
Recognised as one of the most hardworking players around the rugby pitch, the industrious Hooker has notched up 119 appearances for the Blues and has won 7 Welsh caps.
Speaking at the Vale of Glamorgan Training Centre, Gareth said,
"I'm delighted to have signed a new contract with the region. Although I had offers from clubs in France, there was nowhere else I wanted to go."
"I've been at the Blues for seven years and this new contract will take me up to 10 which is great. I love playing for the Blues and it really feels like home for me now."
"I feel that there is something good happening with the Blues at the moment with the new training facilities and new stadium, although we have had a bit of the a blip at the start of this season, I'm sure we will come out of it and we showed great character with the win over Toulouse at home."
"I still have ambitions to win silverware with the region and ambitions to play for Wales and hopefully my chance will come during the Six Nations."
Deiniol Jones has signed a new two year deal that will keep him with the region until 2012.
Originally from Cardigan where he attended Ysgol Gyfun Llandysul, Deiniol Jones went on to study Chemistry at Bath University in 1997 where he caught the eye of the scouts of Bath RFC. He joined the Cardiff Blues in 2004 and has been one of the most consistent players for the Blues over recent seasons and currently holds the record for the most appearances for the Blues with 138 appearances.
An unsung hero for the Cardiff Blues, the 32year old seven cap Lock is almost always in the match day twenty-two and has made 14 appearances out of 15 competitive matches for the Blues so far this season.
Speaking at the Vale of Glamorgan Training Centre Deiniol said,
I'm obviously delighted to have signed a new contract with the Blues."
"I feel that the squad has grown from strength to strength over recent seasons and now there is a real competition for places in the starting XV which is healthy."
"The training facility and stadium are also obviously a huge step forward for us and no doubt are up there with the best around."
Cardiff Blues Director of Rugby, David Young added,
"Deiniol has been one of our most consistent players over recent seasons and the type of guy you don't really appreciate until he's not playing."
"He does all the unseen donkey work around the field and always gives you 100%."
Speaking of Gareth Williams, Young added,
"To me Gareth has been the form hooker in Wales over the last year.""He's proven to be a real leader both on and off the filed for the Blues and is a great guy to have around - he's very industrious and seems to be everywhere around the pitch."
"It's a real boost to the squad that both Gareth and Deiniol have signed new contracts with the region."
"It shows that the region is certainly heading in the right direction."

Ospreys Director of Coaching, Scott Johnson, commented:
"Looking back at last weekend, we have to be reasonably happy with the way things went, particularly how the scoreboard looked at the final whistle, but if we consider our performance objectively we realise that there is plenty to work on ahead of Saturday. It was the result that we wanted, what is important now is that we don't let our hard work go to waste this weekend.
"We're at the halfway stage of the pool. There are three games over the coming month that will each provide their own unique challenge, with Viadana on Saturday the first one, and we know that we will have to hit the highest standard in each of the three games if we are going to have any hope of progressing in the competition.
"We weren't particularly happy with the way the first 20 went out there, we found it difficult to take control of the game, so it is clear that if we don't start the game firing properly then they will be looking to take advantage. They showed last week what they are capable of if allowed to play, they worked hard to put us off our stride and certainly contested hard in certain areas of the game. Their try showed that if we give them any space whatsoever they will take advantage of it, so we now that we need to keep concentration levels high.
"The attitude of the squad this week has been first rate. They know that they had to work hard for the win last weekend, they realise that although we are improving as a team there is still some way to go, but they are prepared to put that effort in to get there, which is very pleasing to see as a coach.
"The strength of our squad has been tested to its limit in this competition, so it's good to see the likes of Adam, Ian and Ryan among the replacements. These are experienced players and proven competitors at the highest level, so we know what they will be bringing to the table over the next couple of months. We are delighted to welcome them back into the squad and look forward to seeing them back in an Ospreys shirt again."
The following players were not considered because of injury
Duncan Jones - broken bone in foot
Barry Davies - groin
Shane Williams - torn hamstring

17.12.09. Dragons team v Biarritz

James Leadbeater is looking to get his first Dragons cap in the region’s must-win game against Biarritz Olympique tomorrow night (Friday, 8pm)
Scrum half Leadbeater, who has come through the Dragons Academy and represented Wales at Under 20 level will start on the bench as both Wayne Evans (knee) and Alex Walker (shoulder) are ruled out with injury.
Dragons back row Gavin Thomas will start to get his 50th Heineken Cup cap and Hooker Steve Jones is set to captain the side.
Rob Sidoli who came in to the away leg to replace the injured Luke Charteris (thigh) is joined by Hoani Macdonald and Martyn Thomas comes in for the injured Jason Tovey (ankle)
"Our injuries are a big blow," said Dragons Head Coach Paul Turner. "Luke Charteris and Dan Lydiate are our in-form Welsh players at the moment and it’s very disappointing for them and for the team as a whole that they can’t be involved tonight. This is offset to a certain extent by the return of Tom Willis and Joe Bearman whose absence has been really felt on the pitch.
"There is no doubt that we need a win tonight to keep our European hopes alive. We need to start well and eradicate the errors from last weekend. A week (or should I say five days) is a long time in rugby and tonight we are certainly looking to set right the problems of last week and take the game to Biarritz."
Dragons team for Biarritz

Martyn Thomas, Aled Brew, Thomas Riley, Mathew Watkins, Richard Fussell; James Arlidge; Danny Lee; Alistair Mckenzie, Steve Jones (C), Peter Bracken, Hoani Macdonald, Robert Sidoli, Joe Bearman, Gavin Thomas, Grant Webb
Replacements

Tom Willis, Hugh Gustafson, Gethin Robinson, Lewis Evans, James Harris , James Leadbeater, Shaun Connor, Rhodri Gomer Davies

17.12.09. Ospreys Prydie to set Heineken record

Prydie sets new Heineken Cup record

Date: Thursday 17th December 2009
Issued on behalf of Ospreys
Teenage hopeful Tom Prydie has spoken of his pride at becoming the youngest player ever to appear in a Heineken Cup fixture.
The Porthcawl youngster came off the bench during the final minutes of Saturday's win against Viadana to make his competition debut at the age of 17 years and 293 days, 15 days younger than the previous record holder, Leinster's Richard Governley.
Fly-half Governley made just three Heineken Cup appearances in his career, the first coming aged 17 years and 308 days in a 34-17 defeat against the Scarlets in October 1996, while the next youngest player in the competition is Nicolas Morlaes who turned out for Dax against Benetton Treviso the same week as Governley's debut, aged 18 years and 14 days. In recent years, the youngest player has been Bourgoin's Morgan Parra, whose tournament debut came in December 2006 against Leicester Tigers, aged 18 years and 23 days.
Speaking about his appearance at the weekend, Prydie said that the debut, while unexpected, had been a welcome boost for him:
"I didn't really expect to play to be honest. We had a few problems last week with players being unavailable so I got a call-up to the squad. I thought I was pretty much just going to be making up the numbers and I was just excited to be involved to be honest. Everything else is just a bonus.
"I'd been involved in pre-season against Leeds and Gloucester, as well as on a match-day at the Liberty Stadium, but this was my first real involvement and my first proper away trip, so it was a great experience for me. To be part of the group travelling away and preparing for such a big game has given me a real taste of what will hopefully be in store for me in the future.
"I didn't really think about anything like being the youngest player or anything like that, I didn't even realise. When I go the call to go on from the bench I was just excited to be playing and I was concentrating on doing everything right. I didn't really have much time to get that involved, I made a couple of tackles, but it was just nice to be on the field. It was a good experience for me that hopefully I can build on."
Fast-tracked through the Ospreys age-grade system this season after catching the eye of Director of Coaching Scott Johnson during the summer, Prydie's landmark appearance means that the region now boasts not only the Heineken Cup's youngest ever player, but also the Magners League's youngest ever player, Ashley Beck. In fact, in the Magners, four of the five youngest players of all time were wearing an Ospreys shirt, the others being Kristian Phillips, Aled Brew and Matthew Jarvis, with only John Barclay of Glasgow getting a look-in from outside of the region, while Phillips is also the competition's youngest ever try scorer.
With the region's record for putting its faith in youth clearly unparalleled, Prydie says that he's in the best set-up possible for a developing young player:
"The target for me was to be playing regular Premiership all this season, so obviously being called up for the Heineken Cup is incredible, much more than I could have hoped for. The coaches have given me a chance, they've put their trust in me as a youngster, which is great. The Ospreys are keen to develop local young players, my involvement on Saturday shows that it's a good place for anyone starting off in their career, and the number of players being developed by the region is really high. I couldn't be in a better place to try and achieve my ambitions as a rugby player. Obviously, after being involved on Saturday I'd love to play in the Heineken Cup again, but I know that I'm still only young and need to be patient as my chance will come."

15.12.09. International Rugby returns to Brewery Field

WRU PRESS RELEASE

Issued: 15 December 2009
International rugby returns to Bridgend
The Brewery Field, Bridgend will see the return of international rugby in February when it becomes the Six Nations home of Wales Women for 2010.
Wales Women are currently Triple Crown winners and will play all three of their home Six Nations 2010 fixtures at the ground - Scotland on Sunday February 14, France on Sunday 28 February and Italy on Sunday 21 March, all kick-offs at 2pm.
The Brewery Field hosted six Wales Women games between 1994 and 2002 and are pleased to welcome the side back to Bridgend.
Bridgend RFC Chairman Derrick King said, "We are delighted to have them back. The Brewery Field was home to Wales Women for a number of years, we enjoyed good crowds and a good atmosphere so I'm sure the Bridgend rugby public will welcome them back with open arms.
"Non Evans played some of her first international games here and it's great that we are welcoming back a successful side with the team having won the Triple Crown last year. We know it's a big season for the girls with the World Cup at the end of it so we hope to be able to give them a good home base for their Six Nations games to get their year off to a good start.
"In conjunction with Bridgend Town Football club, we now own the lease of the Brewery Field once again , and our main priority over the last six months has been to regenerate the club and its facilities and try to make it a centre for the whole of the Bridgend community.
"We have modernised the changing facilities, the medical room, the reception rooms and I know the team will have the best possible environment for their Six Nations matches. With the work that has been done, I feel we now have some of the best club facilities in Wales outside of the Regional game."
Wales Women head coach Jason Lewis added, "It's excellent that we will be hosted by Bridgend RFC at the Brewery Field for our Six Nations games. Bridgend is a club with great history and profile and this news shows the increased importance the WRU places on showcasing Women's rugby.
"Being from Bridgend myself, I know how much of a rugby town Bridgend is, and other international games have been very well supported here, hopefully the same will go for us.
"The Six Nations is an extremely important tournament for us, regardless of the World Cup at the end of the season. We won the Triple crown last year, so we are keen to build on the performances of the last few championships.
"It will be tough to play England away from home in our first game but we will look forward to our first home game against Scotland at Bridgend."
It will be a case of the wheel turning full circle for Non Evans who won her first cap in an 11-6 victory over Scotland at the Brewery Field in 1996. Evans also won her 50th cap against Scotland, at the Arms Park in 2004 but is looking forward to a return to Bridgend.
"We always had a really good welcome at Bridgend, both by the club and all the supporters. I'm really looking forward to making it our home ground again this season."

15.12.09. Millenium Stadium launch2010 Community Events

Stadium Launches Unique Community Events 2010

Issued: 15 December 2009
The Millennium Stadium has launched its 2010 Community Events programme which offers Welsh charities the unique opportunity to bring their events to the iconic venue in the New Year without incurring hire charges.
The initiative was first introduced ten years ago to offer the multi-event venue at cost to charitable organisations on 15 separate days set aside each year and has welcomed a variety of projects to the home of Welsh sport since its inception.
A host of sports stars plying their trade in Wales have lent their support to a variety of causes such as Wales and Newport Gwent Dragons Colin Charvis, who backed the "Show Racism the Red Card" annual award ceremony, and Cardiff City striker Michael Chopra, rugby league's Celtic Crusaders and the legendary Team Calzaghe who supported UnLtd Sport Relief this year.
Former Wales captain Charvis has fond memories of the Millennium Stadium - ending his international career on a high at the home of Welsh sport with a try in the last of his 94 Welsh appearances against South Africa in 2007 - and is delighted to support the Community Events programme at the Cardiff venue.
He said: "This is a great initiative which allows charitable organisations to boost the profile of their annual events within the iconic setting of, arguably the best rugby venue in the world, Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.
"Over the years I have lent my support to various charitable organisations and have taken part in the popular community events programme at the Stadium on more than one occasion.
"I am happy to dedicate my time outside of the coaching environment to support the excellent work that our local charities administer and I would urge any organisation with a charitable conference or event coming up to get their application forms in to the Millennium Stadium events team as soon as possible and not to miss out!"
Millennium Stadium Manager Gerry Toms heads up the scheme which has supported varied charitable causes since the Stadium was built in 1999.
Mr Toms said: "The Community Events programme is a great opportunity for charitable organisations all over Wales to enjoy their national stadium facilities without the costs that commercial organisations face when bringing their conference and event requirements to the city centre.
"The events have been hugely successful over the years and attracted a range of positive activity from community football to landing the St John's Ambulance helicopter on the roof of the Stadium."
Nevertheless, the Stadium Manager is keen to encourage new ideas from community groups in Wales, he added: "We encourage people from right across Wales to apply and welcome new groups of people with new ideas.
"We can be flexible here due to the multi-functional nature of the Stadium which has attracted a wide range of events and will continue to do so in the future. If it is possible then our team can make it happen here within the Community Events programme."
The Millennium Stadium invites applications from community and youth groups, amateur sporting clubs and organisations but excludes profit making events.
Up to 15 events each year will be staged free of charge except for direct costs incurred by the Millennium Stadium which will be borne by the event organisers.
Mr Toms urges all those interested in the scheme to complete the application process on the website: www.millenniumstadium.com.
"Any not-for-profit organisation interested in the scheme should visit the website and apply as early as possible. A member of our team will get back to you to discuss your idea and how we can make your event happen," he said.

14.12.09 Ospreys Barry Davies out for 2/4 weeks

Groin problem puts Davies out of action

Date: Saturday 12th December 2009
Issued on behalf of Ospreys
Barry Davies has been ruled out of action for a period of two to four weeks after undergoing keyhole surgery to repair a groin injury.
The 28 year old full-back, who has been in eye catching form since the Ospreys brought him back to Welsh rugby from Brive during the summer, had the operation on Friday and now faces a spell on the sidelines.
Physio Chris Towers explained:
"Barry has failed to recover from a groin problem which has prevented him from training fully in recent weeks, through conservative treatment, so a decision was made in his best interests to opt for surgery. It was not a major procedure, and with an aggressive rehab programme over the next couple of weeks, he is only likely to be unavailable for selection for a period of two to four weeks."

WRU PRESS RELEASE

WALES MAINTAIN WINNING MOMENTUM
Wales have won silverware for the second week running by claiming the Bowl in George, South Africa, in the second leg of the IRB Sevens series.
Craig Hill raced over in the first half and Lee Rees scored in the second period to lead Wales's charge to a 14-5 victory over Russia in a hard fought final. Gareth Rees banged over two conversions to complete the scoring for Wales.
Russia rallied late on to score through Lev Sleptsov but it proved too little too late as Wales picked up their second title in two weeks.
En route to the final Wales swept aside the challenge of Tunisia 33-0 in the quarter-final before brushing aside the rapidly improving Portugal 24-7 in the semis.
After being knocked out of the main draw after finishing their pool in third place behind New Zealand and Samoa, Wales were looking to assert their authority in the Bowl competition.
In the quarter-final bowl against Tunisia there was only one side in it. Wales led 19-0 at the break thanks to tries by Justin Tiperic, Ashley Beck and Ifan Evans.
Wales suffered a setback when Chris Davies was sin binned in first minute of second half but tries by Alex Cuthbert and Gareth Davies ensured passage through to the semis.
Portugal put up a tougher fight in the semi-final and held Wales to a 5-0 lead after a Cuthbert try. But Wales stepped up a gear in the second spell and got the perfect start when Davies scampered over. Goncalo Foro hit back with Diogo Miranda adding the extras but Justin Tiperic put the issue beyond doubt with two smartly taken tries.
Wales coach Paul John was a delighted man after guiding his young side to their second success within seven days.
"Let's be realistic, we've got eight brand new players in the squad. Eight players who have not played sevens tournament rugby before. But this bunch of youngsters have grown and grown tremendously on and off the field.
"They have pushed all the sides really close over the first two tournaments. We've played all the big teams over the past couple of weeks except for Kenya and England and to be fair, they have done themselves proud.
"We've got a lot more points than we did this time last year, so we've exceeded expectations from the first two tournaments so they can take confidence from what they have achieved.
"They have won both Bowls comfortably and two win two Bowls is difficult. They've shown they have the potential to get into the semi-finals of the main draw."

Duncan set for spell on sidelines as Adam returns to action

Date: Saturday 12th December 2009

Issued on behalf of Ospreys
The Ospreys have received contrasting news of the fitness of props Adam and Duncan Jones.
Loose-head Duncan has been ruled out of action for at least six weeks after a CT Scan confirmed a fracture of one of the tarsal bones in his right foot, an injury that occurred during the recent Magners League win against Munster at the Liberty Stadium.
However, the blow has been softened by the confirmation that tight-head Adam is lined up for a return to action next weekend after recovering from surgery to repair the shoulder he damaged on Lions duty in the summer, slightly ahead of schedule.
Ospreys Physio Chris Towers commented:
"In Duncan's case, the medical advice is to keep him off the injured foot for six weeks to allow the bone heal. Once it is confirmed that the bone has healed, we will then move him onto a progressive return to playing.
"Adam returned to full training at the end of last week, including contact, without any reaction, which is obviously excellent news. We are now looking to involve him in a normal rugby programme in training, which will see him available for selection against Viadana at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday."

9.12.09. dragons squad for Biarritz

Newport Gwent Dragons Head Coach Paul Turner has named a 25-man squad for the region’s Heineken Cup match against Biarritz Olympique on Sunday (13 December, 12:45pm UK time)
The region are boosted by the return of Tom Willis and Joe Bearman whilst Steve Jones and Rob Sidoli are both rested.
"It’s a boost for us to have Tom and Joe back," said Head Coach Paul Turner. "Leaving Steve and Rob behind is about managing the squad. We have a very short turnaround between the two Heineken Cup rounds and we need to be able to best manage that.
"We are well aware of what Biarritz can offer. They’ve got spark and pace on the wing and Damien Traille remains one of the best centres in the world. We have a good group of players here but we’re going to be under the pump in France. We have to resist that pressure which is something we’ve got pretty good at.
Backs

Aled Brew, Alex Walker, James Arlidge, Jason Tovey, Martyn Thomas, Matthew Watkins, Rhodri Gomer Davies, Richard Fussell, Tom Riley, Wayne Evans, Will Harries.
Forwards

Adam Jones, Ali McKenzie, Dan Lydiate, Duane Goodfield, Gavin Thomas, Gethin Robinson, Grant Webb, Hoani MacDonald, Hugh Gustafson, Joe Bearman, Lewis Evans, Luke Charteris, Peter Bracken, Tom Willis.

9.12.09 Wales 7's win BBC Team Award

WRU PRESS RELEASE

WALES SEVENS NAMED BBC CYMRU WALES TEAM OF THE YEAR
The Wales Sevens team were last night (Tuesday) names BBC Cymru Wales team of the year, after becoming Rugby World Cup Sevens champions in March.
Lee Beach, who captained the team to glory in Dubai said, "It's great that our achievement at the Rugby World Cup Sevens put Wales on the map again and it's also great to receive recognition from inside Wales in terms of this Team of the Year award.
"We produced a spectacle for Wales to be proud of and we'll never forget the experience.
"Our victory has done a lot for Sevens in Wales - seven of the side currently competing in Dubai and George, plus Darren Daniels who didn't travel this time are now contracted as core Sevens players which is a step up from where we were last year."
Lee Williams, who is now a regular in the Scarlets side following the Sevens success added, "Sevens certainly helps you to develop as a fifteen a side player. I've certainly seen the benefit of our RWC success in terms of my position in the Scarlets squad - albeit as a wing!
"Sevens gives you different skills from the fifteen a side game but they are skills that can be transferred to the professional game."
Wales' most capped rugby player, Wales Women wing Louise Rickard, was one of the nominees for BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year.
Rickard, who won her 109th cap against Sweden last month, was involved in Wales Women's first victory over England last February and in the side's Triple Crown win.
She said, "It's amazing to have been named amongst such prestigious sports personalities. Our team has been really successful during the last couple of years and this nomination was certainly recognition for the whole team.
"We have a tough season coming up with the World Cup at the end of it. Our goal is to win the tournament despite being in the Pool of death with South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. I'm working very hard at the moment to have a chance of being involved in the world cup, there are certainly no guarantees."

CAPITAL PIVOT AWARDED PRINCIPALITY HONOURS

WRU PRESS RELEASE
Issued: 08 December 2009
Cardiff outside half Gareth Davies has won the Principality Premiership Player of the Month award for November.
Davies is currently with the Wales Sevens squad in Dubai having caught the eye of Paul John and the Wales Sevens management team.
Principality Premiership holders Cardiff are currently fifth in the table but only three points behind leaders Neath, and were the only Welsh side to win both their opening British and Irish Cup ties in November, beating Pontypridd 22-16 and Birmingham & Solihull 51-20. Davies has amassed 145 points already this season, already closing in on last year's tally of 208.
Premiership head coaches, WRU and Regional academy staff, and selected journalists select the winner who receives £100 from the Principality Building Society, title sponsors of the competition.
Davies, who hails from Cefn Hengoed and played all of his junior and youth rugby for Penallta Rugby Club said, "I'm really enjoying my rugby at the moment. It's my third season with Cardiff and my game seems to have come together well this season. The coaching has been good and Lee Jarvis has helped a lot with my kicking and my all-round game and I've thoroughly enjoyed my Wales Sevens experience so far."
Cardiff assistant coach Jarvis added, "Gareth produced consistently good performances last season and has upped his game again this season, earning him a call-up to Wales Sevens.
"He is working very hard on his game, developing week by week and hopefully he will get some Regional rugby for the Blues by the end of the season. He has a good group of players around him at Cardiff but he controls the game well. I'm sure the experience of these two Sevens tournaments will benefit him greatly, both in terms of his game and his confidence.
"As far as our goals as a team are concerned, we are satisfied with where we are in the League at the moment. This time last year we were in a similar position and we went on to win the title so we are not too worried at the moment. We started slowly but we are now building well. We have played a lot of games recently and we've got a tough match on the weekend at Sardis Road but we are definitely keen to retain our title - and go as far as we can in the British and Irish Cup too."
Mark Richards, Principality Retail Sales Manager for Cardiff, said: "Congratulations to Gareth Davies on winning this month's Player of the Month award. Gareth has had an outstanding start to the season and we hope he returns from Dubai with even greater determination.
"We wish Gareth and the team all the best in the New Year and hope that they will once again reign as Principality Premiership champions."

WRU PRESS RELEASE

Issued: 05 December 2009
WALES WIN BOWL IN DUBAI
Wales confirmed that their new look side has massive potential by winning the Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens Bowl final with a comprehensive demolition of Zimbabwe that resulted in a 38-7 victory.
The Welsh seven had the game effectively won when they led 19-7 at the break with tries from Jevon Groves, Ifan Evans and Justin Tiperic with two conversions from Gareth Davies.
Then in the second half Wales continued their relentless pursuit of points to score tries by Evans, Davies, and Alex Cuthbert with Davies again converting two of the scores.
Wales began the second day of the tournament with a Bowl quarter final against a Scotland side that had seriously malfunctioned in the pool stages. In the event Wales were more comfortable winners than the 19-12 scoreline suggested.
Lloyd Williams did the initial damage with a try for Wales after Scotland had put the ball straight into touch at the kick-off. Then when Williams cut open the Scotland defence with a run down the right wing Justin Tiperic was on hand to run in the score, converted by
Gareth Davies.
Scotland finally got into the game with a try from their Sale back row David Tait to leave the Scots trailing 5-12 at the break.
Wales effectively wrapped up the match with a try from Alex Cuthbert, the 19 year-old UWIC student using his pace to score under the posts leaving Davies with an easy conversion.
Scotland scored a late try by Andy Turnbull converted by Grant Anderson
but it only served to make the scoreline less painful for the Scots.
Then in the Bowl semi final Wales faced a USA side that had looked useful in the pool stages. In the event Wales had the tie virtually won by half time when they led 19-7 with tries from Lloyd Williams, Jevon Groves and Alex Cuthbert.
Overall New Zealand put behind them a poor series last season to win the Cup final with a 24-12 win over Samoa while in the Plate final Australia pulled off a popular win against South Africa.
