WALES WIN BOWL IN DUBAI
Wales confirmed that their new look side has massive potential by winning the Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens Bowl final with a comprehensive demolition of Zimbabwe that resulted in a 38-7 victory.
The Welsh seven had the game effectively won when they led 19-7 at the break with tries from Jevon Groves, Ifan Evans and Justin Tiperic with two conversions from Gareth Davies.
Then in the second half Wales continued their relentless pursuit of points to score tries by Evans, Davies, and Alex Cuthbert with Davies again converting two of the scores.
Wales began the second day of the tournament with a Bowl quarter final against a Scotland side that had seriously malfunctioned in the pool stages. In the event Wales were more comfortable winners than the 19-12 scoreline suggested.
Lloyd Williams did the initial damage with a try for Wales after Scotland had put the ball straight into touch at the kick-off. Then when Williams cut open the Scotland defence with a run down the right wing Justin Tiperic was on hand to run in the score, converted by
Gareth Davies.
Scotland finally got into the game with a try from their Sale back row David Tait to leave the Scots trailing 5-12 at the break.
Wales effectively wrapped up the match with a try from Alex Cuthbert, the 19 year-old UWIC student using his pace to score under the posts leaving Davies with an easy conversion.
Scotland scored a late try by Andy Turnbull converted by Grant Anderson
but it only served to make the scoreline less painful for the Scots.
Then in the Bowl semi final Wales faced a USA side that had looked useful in the pool stages. In the event Wales had the tie virtually won by half time when they led 19-7 with tries from Lloyd Williams, Jevon Groves and Alex Cuthbert.
Overall New Zealand put behind them a poor series last season to win the Cup final with a 24-12 win over Samoa while in the Plate final Australia pulled off a popular win against South Africa.
